The typical Tasmanian family home uses:
- 50% of its energy heating the home
- 25% of its energy heating water
- 9% of its energy on cooking
Keeping curtains of sunny north-facing windows
open during the day can let in up to 3 kilowatt hours of energy a day per
square metre of window – equal to a single bar radiator running for 3
hours. And it's free! Windows on the southern side of your home cannot let
in winter solar heat. To conserve heat,
curtains should be drawn when the temperature outside is less that that inside
and no direct sunshine is entering. Double glazing is an alternative to
curtains for keeping houses warm in winter and cool in summer.
Our next monthly meeting is on Wednesday 8th
August at 7 pm at the Community Meeting Room, 22 Torrens Street, Richmond.
